What is the point?

Fri Aug 19, 2005, 8:58 AM
Can I just ask - What is the point of all of this?: [link]

If you're going to make something look like a photo with a photo reference and both look exactly the same and the end result is devoid of anything other than the fact than it looks the same, what is the point? It's like tracing. You do it because you can't draw. It can be art, obviously, depending upon the content and context.

This person irritates me. I don't care who he is.

thanks for the add. as for use of photographs - its the visual arts dirty secret. From what I can gather, everyone uses photos. Painters like Freud do not. Photos have been used by Delarcoix, Degas, Sickert, Warhol, Tuymans, Koons, Hirst, etc, etc. In many cases is seems it only matters if you are caught, or more precicely, even your important and rich enough for it to matter if you are caught. Personally I use a lot of magazine photos, but I deliberatly avoid arty or striking photos, because they have enough art in them already. What I like is to take banal comon place images and make them special by how I paint them - transform them. The equivivent would be hip hop, no body gave a dam about sampling when hip hop was confined to the getto and only a handful of people bought the records. But now hip hop is big money and it matters a great deal. But again I would say that the test of comparison is important, what people do with their influnces is very important - do they improve, transform or radically alter their infl;unces or are they just out and out stealing.
